As it's name indicates, it's made out of plastic where as many of the other items in this catagory are metal but it does everything they do at about 20-30% of the cost. The cost of shipping was more than the cost of the tamper. The dual size tampers is a nice feature if you are not sure what size you need for your machine and the shaft between the two is long enough that you can firmly grip the unit without your fingers/knuckles getting in the way when tamping the grinds.

We had a bit smaller version of this for years and LOVED it!! This one looks prettier but it is harder to use. We always steamed milk right in our mug before but with this one it is almost impossible to do because it immediately foams over and makes a huge mess. It does not adjust to steam/froth so you just get froth! It drives me crazy! I would rather have the other Capresso that is a bit smaller but worked great. If you never steam milk I suppose the espresso part works fine. I don't like it :(

I felt this was a little expensive and isn't a perfect design, but it does allow you to fill the portafilter without having to hold it in place and it does solve some of those cleanup issues that occur if you don't have it. I'm glad I bought it.

I must add my voice to the growing chorus of dissatisfied B&D SmartGrind owners. My biggest complaint is that the size distribution of the resultant grind on any coarseness setting runs the gamut from superfine powder to large flakes. During the grind, I have to lay a towel over the seam between the unit and the grind collection cup to keep fine particles from flying out -- doesn't happen every time, and there's not a lot, but very noticeable against the white wall and countertop!
I've had mine for about half a year now and use it 4 or 5 times a week. A crack has developed at the bottom of the whole bean cup (like that of the other reviewers here) and is slowly working its way up the side toward the lid. The final insult is that this device is LOUD: your neighbors will wonder why you're always doing small carpentry projects early in the morning...

This is a long awaited tamp for my espresso machine!! After working in the coffee industry I have missed having a great tamp for my at home use. Most stores have now moved to an entirely automated process and I have to say my preference is for the port-a-filter by far on my little "Barista" machine from Starbucks. (which has held up with everyday use since 2003!) But searching for the best scoop and the best tamp have been challenging to say the least. In the end this is the type of tamp I have loved working with in the coffee business when they did use a similar machine. It has a great balance, heft in your hand (great self defense if it came down to it in the kitchen), and a perfect fit (do measure the inside of your port-a-filter if you want to order one, nothing would be more frustrating than it not fitting your particular machine, try to get as close a measurement on the diameter of the inside of the screen so you get the perfect tamp, don't assume that all espresso machines are the same size, they have different sizes all varying by millimeters!).

Definitely the gift for the coffee lover who has an espresso machine.

Vaneli's Solid Stainless Steel Tamper 53mm--2.09 inches (2 1/8")

Starbucks Barista Home Espresso Machine - Stainless Steel

This tamper fits my Starbucks Barista's 53mm portofilter perfectly. Pretty much like it was machined specifically for my portofilter/basket. This tamper is heavier than my friend's Reg Barber (shockingly heavy actually), and in my opinion has nicer workmanship. For the price this HAS to be the best tamper on the market.
